ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Having accumulated a wide diversity of professional experience in the
fields of illustration and the mural decorative arts, these activities have a
strong influence on the graphic form of my personal creations. My inspiration
comes from many sources: books, dreams, places and people I have encountered,
and a few of ‘my favourite things’ in life.
Having done a lot of architectural perspective drawing, I enjoy creating
imaginary architectural environments that are often animated by fantastic of
allegorical beings: human, or animal/human hybrids.
Anthropomorphized animal forms , popular
themes in nearly all forms of 'primitive' art, take on a clearly European style
in many of my paintings. As an artist, I don’t strive to seduce the public at
any expense: I attempt to reveal beauty where it’s not
so obvious to most people.
In terms of technique, a well-constructed drawing is always the
foundation of my paintings. Bosch, Goya, Delvaux, and Balthus are a few of the
artists who have inspired me. I stretch my own canvases, often preparing the
ground in the technique of the old masters, and although I paint mostly in oils,
I also paint in acrylics, gouache, and watercolor.
